1 Timothy

INTRODUCTION

Chapter 1

Greeting

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Christ Jesus who is our hope,

2 to Timothy, a a true son in the faith: b Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

False Teachers of the Law

3 As I urged you to stay in Ephesus c when I went into Macedonia, so that you might charge some d that they teach no other doctrine,

4 e nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies that cause disputes, rather than God’s work that is in faith.

5 Now f the purpose of the commandment is love g out of a pure heart, and a good conscience and a sincere faith,

6 from which some, having swerved, have turned aside to h meaningless discussion,

7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say, nor what they affirm.

8 But we know that the law is i good, if a man uses it lawfully.

9 Knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for murderers,

10 for immoral men, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound teaching,

11 according to the glorious gospel of the j blessed God that was k committed to my trust.

God’s Grace to Paul

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has l enabled me, m because He counted me faithful, n putting me into service.

13 o I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and injurious. But I obtained mercy because p I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 And q the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant r with faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15 s This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that t Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.

16 Yet for this reason I obtained mercy so that in me first, Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering for an example to those who should hereafter believe on Him to eternal life.

17 Now to u the King of the ages, v immortal, w invisible, x the only wise God, y be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that you by them might fight a good fight,

19 keeping faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these things, and thus, shipwrecked their faith,

20 of whom are z Hymenaeus and a Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan so that they might learn not to b blaspheme.

Chapter 2

Worship

1 Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,

2 a for kings and b all who are in authority, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is c good and acceptable in the sight d of God our Savior,

4 e who desires all men to be saved f and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

5 g For there is one God and h one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

6 i who gave Himself a ransom for all — the testimony in its proper time.

7 j For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle — I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not — k a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

8 Therefore, I want the men to pray in l every place, m lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.

9 In like manner also, that n women dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and sobriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,

10 o but rather that which manifests women professing godliness through good works.

11 Let a woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But p I do not allow a woman to teach or to be dominant over a man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived fell into transgression.

15 But women will be kept safe through childbearing, if they continue in faith and love and holiness with self-control.

Chapter 3

Elders and Menservants

1 This is a true saying: If a man aspires to oversee, he desires a good work.

2 The overseer, then, must be blameless, the husband of one wife, self-disciplined, sober-minded, respectable, hospitable, able to teach;

3 not an excessive drinker, not violent; but forbearing, not contentious, not covetous;

4 one who manages well his own household, having his children in subjection with all dignity.

5 (If a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?)

6 He must not be a new convert, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7 Moreover, he must have a good report from those outside, lest he fall into reproach and the a snare of the devil.

8 Likewise, the menservants must be dignified, not double-tongued, b not given to much wine, not greedy of dishonest gain,

9 holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10 But let these also first be tested, then let them serve, being found blameless.

11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, but self-disciplined, faithful in all things.

12 Let the menservants be the husbands of one wife, managing their children and their own houses well.

13 For those who have served well as servants c gain for themselves a good standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly.

15 But if I tarry long, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16 And beyond question, great is the mystery of godliness. d He who was manifested in the flesh, was e justified in the Spirit, f seen by angels, g preached to the Gentiles, h believed on in the world, and i received up into glory.

Chapter 4

Instructions for Evangelists

1 Now the Spirit clearly says that in the latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed a to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,

2 b speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience c seared with a hot iron;

3 forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from foods that God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving,

5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, d nourished by the words of faith and of good teaching that you have followed.

7 But e refuse profane and old wives’ fables. f Exercise yourself rather to godliness.

8 For g bodily exercise profits little. But godliness is profitable to all things, h having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.

10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach because we trust in the living God i who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.

11 These things command and teach.

12 Let no man despise your youth, but you be an j example to the believers in word, in behavior, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

13 Until I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching.

14 k Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy l with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 Meditate on these things. Give yourself wholly to them so that your progress may appear to all.

16 Take heed to yourself and to the teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will both save yourself and those who hear you.

Chapter 5

Elders, Widows, Bondservants

1 Do not rebuke an elder, but appeal to him as a father, and to the younger men as brethren,

2 the older women as mothers, the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

3 Honor widows who are truly widows.

4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to practice piety at home and a to repay their parents, for this is good and acceptable before God.

5 Now she who is truly a widow and desolate, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers b night and day.

6 But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

7 And these things command so that they may be blameless.

8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, c and especially for those of his own household, d he has denied the faith e and is worse than an unbeliever.

9 Let no one be enrolled as a widow who is under sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,

10 having a reputation for good works; if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

11 But refuse the younger widows, for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry.

12 They bring condemnation on themselves because they have cast off their first faith.

13 And besides, they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

14 Therefore, I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

15 For some have already turned aside after Satan.

16 If any believing man or woman has widows, let them assist them, and do not let the church be burdened, so that it may relieve those who are truly widows.

17 Let the elders who direct well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

18 For the Scripture says, f “You will not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain,” and, g “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”

19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except h before two or three witnesses.

20 Those who continue in sin, rebuke before all so that others also may fear.

21 I charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that you observe these things without i preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

22 Lay hands hastily on no man, nor j be a partaker of another’s sins. Keep yourself pure.

23 Drink no longer water exclusively, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.

24 Some men’s sins are k clearly manifest, going before to judgment. But the sins of some follow after.

25 Likewise also, the good works of some are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.

Chapter 6

Godly Behavior

1 Let as many a bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor so that the name of God and His teaching not be blasphemed.

2 And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brothers. But rather serve them, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

3 If anyone teaches otherwise, and consents not to b wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, c and to the teaching that is according to godliness,

4 he is proud, knowing nothing. He is obsessed with controversy and disputes about words, from which come envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,

5 perverse disputings between men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, supposing that godliness is a means to gain. d From such withdraw yourself.

6 But godliness with e contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is f certain we can carry nothing out.

8 If we have food and clothing, with these let us be g content.

9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and many foolish and harmful lusts that drown men in ruin and destruction.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evils, by which some coveting after have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things. And follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Lay hold on eternal life to which you were also called, and have confessed a good confession before many witnesses.

13 I charge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus h who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession,

14 that you keep this commandment without spot or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15 which in His own time He will manifest, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords,

16 Who only has immortality, dwelling in i the light unto which j no man can approach. Whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17 Charge those who are rich in this world that they not be high-minded or trust in the uncertainty of k riches, but in the living God who richly gives us all things l to enjoy.

18 Teach that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to share,

19 m laying up in store for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

20 O Timothy, n guard what was committed to your trust, o avoiding profane and vain babblings and opposing arguments of what is falsely called knowledge,

21 which some professing have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
